Compostable food packaging refers to materials and containers that are designed to break down into compost under specific composting conditions. These packaging items are made from organic materials such as plant fibers or starches.
Compostable packaging is a specific subset of biodegradable packaging. While all compostable packaging is biodegradable, not all biodegradable packaging is compostable. Compostable packaging undergoes a specific process called composting, where it breaks down into nutrient-rich compost, while biodegradable packaging can break down in various environments, including landfills, but may not necessarily turn into compost.
Within our suite of products, we offer CPLA and PLA “plastic” options that are derived only from plant-based materials but are visually identical to non-compostable plastics products you have seen in the past.
Per FDA requirements, food packaging materials will be marked with a symbol that is indicative of its status. In the case of our compostable line, Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) tests and certifies the product.
In addition to BPI testing to ensure ASTM standards, our products are tested and certified by SGS to meet FDA standards and possess OK Compost Certification.
While additional costs have become synonymous with eco-friendly products in the food packaging industry, our team has developed a product line that is not only competitive in pricing but is often more cost-effective than traditional options.
In addition to the materials readily available to you, our team has established an education committee to raise awareness about our carbon footprint and what we can do to reduce it. Please reach out to our Sustainability Dept. for access to our library of resources and educational programs for details.
